If you own a hot tub or are looking to purchase one, you have probably heard of hot tub ozonators. Hot tub ozonators allow you to control the quality of your Adelaide spa’s water and save you money by reducing the need to purchase large quantities of chemicals. They can also help reduce the dreadful itchy and irritated skin caused by high doses of chemicals in your water such as chlorine.
What is Ozone?
Ozone is a strong and powerful oxidiser of both organic and inorganic contaminants in water. Ozone water purification is 3000 times stronger than the traditional sanitising chemicals such as bromine and chlorine are alone.
How does an Ozonator work?
The hot tub Ozonator is placed directly into the body of your Adelaide spa. The Ozonator converts the oxygen into ozone. The ozone then travels through an airline tube which is connected to the water jet. Both the water and ozone get pushed into your hot tub.
When the ozone makes contact with the water inside the spa, it will remove contaminants such as oils, organic waste, algae and sweat. All while keeping your spa odourless and crystal clear.
Sanitiser vs Oxidiser
It is easy to confuse the two or think they are the same thing. While both products are used to keep your spa clean, they do distinctively different things in different ways.
Sanitisers work by destroying disease-causing bacterias that live in the contents of your spa’s water, while Oxidisers work by consuming and burning away contaminates in the water. Oxidisers use “active oxygen” to consume and convert nonbacterial waste into harmless gases which are then released into the atmosphere. This process changes the state of contaminates (e.g. swimmers waste, organic waste and chemical bi-products), making the removal much more straightforward and easy. This burning process also helps prevent the water from becoming cloudy and helps with mitigating algae growth.
These are the main differences between the two. But the most vital thing oxidisers do is convert the chloramines present in your water back to available chlorine. This process ensures the chlorine in your water is continually optimised for sanitising.
Benefits of installing an Ozonator
Considering the average person sweats about 3 pints per hour at a temperature of 38.9 degrees celsius. Not to mention the average hot tube bather brings around 100 million bacteria into the water. It goes without saying, your spa can be a very, very dirty place. And relying on chemicals such as chlorine isn’t enough. In fact, sweat and waste coming into contact with chlorine are one of the most significant contributing factors to chloramine formation in a spa. Chloramines have 60 to 80 times less the amount of sanitising power than an uncombined chlorine molecule.
The good news is, Ozonators help save you money by using fewer chemicals and help pick up the slack by keeping your Adelaide spa cleaner for longer.
Can an Ozonator replace sanitising chemicals
Although spa Ozonators are one of the strongest forms of oxidisers on the market, it does not sanitise your spa’s water. You will still need to use a filter and sanitising chemicals. But in the end, an Ozonator, you will reduce the use of sanitising chemicals in your water by 60 to 90%, by keeping chloramine formations at bay and allowing your chemical sanitisers to work better for longer. Not to mention, help keep your itchy eyes and irritated skin to a minimum.
